Transformation – Paintings by Susan Grace

Susan Grace is a painter who lives and works in Lawrence, KS. Her work has been widely exhibited throughout the U.S., and she has received numerous awards for her work.  Her paintings are in many private and public collections, including the Mulvane Art Museum, Topeka, KS and The Art of Emprise Collection, Wichita, KS. Although she studied painting in Athens, Greece, her academic background is primarily in literature and theater, and she taught courses in modern American and European literature at universities in the U.S. and at The American College of Greece in Athens, Greece.  While teaching, she always maintained an active studio practice regardless of where she was living. Upon returning to the U.S., she held a tenured faculty position at the University of Kansas until she left for a full-time artist studio practice. Her study of literature and theater continues to inspire and influence her work.

Works by Curt Clonts

Final Friday | July 26th | 5:30 – 9:00

Join us in celebrating our FINAL Final Friday with Curt Clonts!  In September we will be switching over to First Friday openings.  Here is what Curt had to say about his upcoming show!

“I turned 60 this year and it has caused me to reflect on my creating process. I have always maintained that a child is the most natural artist,  so I attempt to make my work through my inner child’s eye. With my paintings I wander in to mistakes, drips, and uneven lines that I tend now to celebrate rather than try to repair.
My drawings and mark making are uneven and lean towards crude. I find joy and liberation in this purposeful approach. I do strive for a great sense of balance, both in color and shape to achieve an overall sophistication that renders the work “finished”.
I am a searcher and so my journey is always joyous and, thankfully, never complete.
As I work through my 60th year, count on me to keep working outside the lines.” – Curt Clonts

Curt Clonts was born in Wichita, Kansas in 1959.  He was a student of regionalist painter Maleta Forsberg, and of nationally known painter James “Jim” Gross.  Clonts is a veteran of over 30 solo exhibitions, most recently at Leedy-Volkous Art in Kansas City, Mo., and The Birger Sandzen Memorial Gallery in Lindsborg, Kansas.  He was the Artist-In-Residence at Friends University from 2006 to 2013.

Currently, Clonts is an on-air commentator (“An Artist’s Perspective) for KMUW 89.1 FM, (Wichita’s NPR Affiliate).  He is featured in the book “Wichita Artists In Their Studios” by Sondra Langel (published in 2016).  His paintings are featured in prominent collections including Wichita Art Museum Permanent Collection, Emprise Bank Permanent Collection, MARKArts Permanent Collection, The Paula and Barry Downing Collection, and The Vantage Point Properties Collection.  Clonts paints daily at his studio and home in College Hill.
