SUMMARY:"RETRIEVING THE MOON" - Curt Clonts & Emily Brookover
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition will feature artworks by local artists\, Curt Clonts & Emily Brookover! \nWe hope you will join us for our opening reception on First Friday\, May 5th from 5:30pm – 9:00pm! \n——–\nARTIST STATEMENTS: \nCURT CLONTS: “I have thought a lot lately about what it was like when I was a kid. I grew up right here in College Hill. These neighborhoods\, trees\, park\, and people are in my blood—they are my blood. Life was magical growing up here in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Aside from the fact that the oldest brothers of some friends were going off to Vietnam\, it was magical. We played hard and we did our chores. We noticed everything. The smell of rain on mowed grass or burning leaves in the fall. Identifying the bird calls we heard from 100 year old elms. The taste of purple mulberries and pears that grow throughout the area. Barefoot\, at all times\, throughout spring and summer. Chlorine stinging the eyes at the swimming pool. The purple of irises and the pink of heavy peonies as they droop towards the ground in countless gardens. The scent of honeysuckle and trumpet vine. \nThese were the things that came to mind as I created much of the work in this show.\nI’d turn on the lights in my studio and then flip on the music to prime my senses. Thelonious Monk\, Cannonball Adderley\, or early Miles Davis. Jazz. Seemingly improvised and always spontaneous. Never knowing what would turn up on the canvas\, I just painted—driven by the music. \nI drank amazing amounts of coffee—black\, because it allowed me to work into the early morning hours\, and because it reminded me that it was the smell of my grandmother’s kitchen.\nI live in College Hill today\, after having gone away for some 21 years. I ALWAYS knew I would come back. I lived in other larger cities and on the other side of the world\, in Okinawa\, Japan (for 3 years). I married a young woman from Okinawa (she was 18/I was 19). I fell in love with her and the island life. We are still together after 43 years. This happiness is also in this body of work. And so are our children and grandchildren. \nOur friends who come over and hang out with us on the front porch—they are in this work as well.\nMy show is about happiness. And it springs from memories made yesterday and today. \nI don’t want to create work about war and politics like I did in my younger years. I want to paint about the world I’ve created for myself. I like it this way. It’s what I cling to and cherish. It’s what I know. \nIt’s home.” – Curt Clonts \n——– \nEMILY BROOKOVER: “My work explores the various relationships between human identity and the things we choose to surround ourselves with or\, in some cases\, avoid altogether. Those things could be objects\, textures\, scents\, sounds. \nAs humans\, we often cling to or are completely repulsed by things that represent past moments\, people\, experiences\, and trauma. One may feel an attachment to a jar of buttons\, a cheap wallet\, the smell of lilac\, or the sound of the ocean. One may also entirely avoid blue bathrobes\, dark wood floors\, or the sound of fingernails clicking on a tabletop. These things\, these objects\, these responses may seem silly or insignificant to one person\, while representing an entire lifetime to another. Choosing provocative objects and items from my memory collection to place within my work provides me the opportunity to recontextualize my experiences and redefine my attached feelings. The work allows me to take moments that were painful\, bitter\, or even regrettable and reconstruct them into new and positive stories.” – Emily Brookover

SUMMARY:ARTIST TALK: Mike Miller - "Be the Art"
DESCRIPTION:We will be hosting an Artist Talk with local artist and sculptor\, Mike Miller!\n—- \nJoin us on Wednesday\, March 8th from 6:00pm – 7:00pm to learn more about his solo-exhibition titled\, “Be the Art”! \n—- \nMiller will be discussing the various techniques\, materials\, concepts\, and themes represented throughout his amazing show. We hope to see you there! \nThis event is free and open to the public!\n“Be the Art” on display at RSG until March 3rd – March 31st\, 2023 \n—- \nARTIST BIO:\nMike Miller is best known for his Machine-Nature Interface series of sculptures. These machine-nature forms combine a natural object with a manmade object\, creating a machine that produces an original movement or action. Most of Mike’s works are kinetic\, whether powered by a motor and salvaged gears\, hand crank\, the wind\, or kids on a swing set.\nThe movements produced echo the machinations of nature itself- plants’ production of oxygen\, the orbit of a moon around a planet. As manmade machines and nature made machines advance the difference between the two becomes indistinguishable. Mike was born\, raised\, and educated in Kansas and finds inspiration and materials for both the machine and the nature aspects of his work around his home and studio in rural Butler County. \n—- \nARTIST STATEMENT:\n“Everything is a machine\, and there are two main types\, human-made and nature-made machines. For instance\, trees are natural machines that absorb carbon dioxide and create oxygen\, and human made machines such as the printing press\, birth control pill\, smartphones\, etc. These machines\, both natural and human-made\, have initiated nearly all changes in human culture. These machines have also driven nearly all the changes in Earth’s environment\, both good and bad.\nWith these sculptures\, I hope to illustrate that we as individuals are personally responsible for Earth’s environment. I also believe that as human technology advances the difference between natural and human-made machines will decrease until they eventually blend together\, and that the merging of the two is a good thing that can eventually fix the Earth’s environmental problems.” – Mike Miller

SUMMARY:Wanderlust - Pam Bjork
DESCRIPTION:This solo exhibition will feature hand embroidered photo montages\, mixed media portrait paintings\, and paper collages by local artist\, Pam Bjork! \nWe hope you will join us for our opening reception on Feb. 3rd from 5:30pm – 9:00pm! \n—- \n“With camera in hand and an inquisitive mind I’ve been fortunate enough to visit six continents. A few of my most meaningful experiences: Bali\, her resplendent beauty and magic helped soothe after the death of my father; Tibet\, witness to a ‘sky burial’ at 15\,000 feet where heaven and earth meet; Sicily\, pilgrimage alongside grieving women during La Processione Dei Misteri after the death of my sister; rare and endangered white lions in Timbavati\, South Africa; Cuba\, initiation with Santeria babalawos; Bhutan\, small Buddhist kingdom whose mission is Gross National Happiness; Ethiopia\, indigenous tribes with painted\, adorned and scarified bodies. Most recently\, Japan beguiled and captivated my imagination. The phrase “ichi-go ichi-e” meaning “one time\, one meeting” captures life’s precious moments. \nAlong the way\, I took photographs and shopped for the sacred\, collecting ceremonial textiles\, objects of devotion and items of beauty – both as an aide-memoire and to bring the experience home. \nThis exhibition is a visual journey of my love affair with the world. The photo montages were created during the pandemic\, weaving together the mystery and enigma of my peripatetic wonderings/wanderings. Akin to the discovery of a special something in the marketplaces of the world\, the discovery of drawings I made as a little girl and the drawings made by my then 5-year-old grandson add to the mix. Images of my paintings meet photographs of people and places visited. Often a stroke of color brings the seemingly disparate pieces together. Having a textile in each piece was important\, to bring the fibers and material presence of each culture present. The stitching is an homage to my mother and grandmother. My collection and images reflect Indra’s Net\, the Buddhist Vedic Hindu philosophy that symbolizes the universe as a web of interconnection and interdependence. Unexpected encounters make a richer weave. \nThis work is an offering to the love and beauty of this world. I hope you experience wonder as you create your own way of wanderlust\, be it near or far.” – Pam Bjork

DESCRIPTION:Join us for our First Friday event! \nOpening reception on Friday\, September 2nd from 5:30pm – 9pm! \n— \nThis exhibition features mixed media photo collages by Valerie Haring and oil-painted portraits by John Oehm! \n— \nValerie Haring – Oehm was born in El Dorado KS. She grew up in the country near the Walnut River where she had the luxury to explore nature and her dad’s old car collection. She earned her AA from Butler CC\, her BSE in Art Education from Emporia State University\, and her MA in Art Education from Wichita State University. \nThroughout her educational journey\, she studied with many of the preeminent college art professors in Kansas. She was the director of the Erman B. White gallery\, Chair of the Butler CC Art Department\, and currently serves as the Interim Dean of Fine Arts and Communication at BCC. \nValerie has an arts education rooted in naturalism and traditional materials. Over the span of her career\, she has explored conceptual subject matter\, and allowed the materials she works with to yield to the concept\, all the while leaning on the formal elements and principles of design. \n“Drawing from observation is like an exhilarating physical workout when one relies on muscle memory to carry one to the finish line. Working non-representationally\, or conceptually\, is like hiking into unknown territory; looking for something to latch onto and transform.” – Haring \n— \nJohn Oehm – a native Nebraskan moved to Wichita in 1977\, after completing his undergraduate degree in painting from the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Oehm earned his MFA in painting from Wichita State University in 1981. \nFor the next 11 years\, Oehm taught at WSU\, the Wichita Center for the Arts\, and in his private studio in downtown Wichita. He joined the art faculty of Butler Community College in 1992. \nSince retiring from Butler CC in 2017\, Oehm has worked full-time as a portrait painter. His portrait work can be found in collections throughout the Midwest and Southwest United States. In 2021 Oehm and Valerie Haring were married. They currently live in Bel Aire\, Kansas. \n“My work reflects a lifelong interest in a tradition of figure and portrait painting that includes the likes of Rembrandt\, Titian\, Alberto Giacometti\, Lucian Freud\, and Jenny Saville. Each of these painters demonstrates a fascination with the illusion of forms in light and space. If it were possible\, I would only paint from life.” – Oehm \n— \n“HARING OEHM” | Exhibition runs September 2nd through September 24th!

SUMMARY:Mila on Display
DESCRIPTION:“Mila on Display” is a group exhibition curated by Anthony Joiner\, owner and director of Mulberry Art Galley! \nThis exhibition is dedicated to honoring Juneteenth and local artists of Wichita. This impactful work was created through unique vision and ambition. \n““Mila on Display” is a tribute to culture. This exhibition gives you a slight glimpse into the world of 6 diverse artists with diverse styles\, all in one place. Although these artists are viewed in a similar light by the city and country they reside in\, their different paths and traditions influence the product of their creativity. As we celebrate Juneteenth and ask ourselves about the question of race in America\, it’s important to understand that there is not a one size fits all approach. Just like the artists in this exhibition have diverse styles\, so do we as individuals. This may make many situations harder\, but that makes the outcome all the more beautiful…” –Anthony Joiner \nFeatured artists:\n-Caitlin Alexander\n-Amy Baber\n-Sheldon Draper\n-Elijah Jacobs\n-Verlene Mahomes\n-Brittany Stewart \nMany of the artworks on display pay homage to the past while also giving a glimpse of a bright future. These expressive creations focus on personal growth\, self empowerment\, cultural pride and connection. \nWe hope you will join us for our reception on First Friday\, June 3rd\, from 5:30pm – 9:00pm! \n————————————-\n“Mila on Display” | Exhibition runs June 3rd through June 25th\, 2022 \n(Note: we have designated parking behind RSG that are marked with signs. SUMMARY:SYNTHESIS FROM THE SOIL
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening of… \n“Synthesis from the Soil”\nby William Tinker \nExhibition opens Friday\, May 6th 2022\, from 5:30pm – 9pm \nThe artwork on display will feature large-scale\, abstracted landscapes filled with vivid color by William. \n——– \n“The process of aging has caused me to look for subjects to paint much closer to home. For years\, we drove the mid and southwest\, always looking for the perfect curvature of land and trees and sky that would represent the best of where we grew up and lived. \nAlmost always\, the subjects I would chose had as much to do with the things that were growing on the land as the overall beauty of its entirety. \nThis continuous search for subject matter has morphed into a much more localized approached to include my wife’s multiple gardens. I’m amazed at the continuous changing shapes and colors of flowers\, foods\, grasses\, and trees that our large yard provides. \nNo longer using my Nikon with its many lenses\, I grab my phone\, take as many pictures as I please\, and then head for my computer to help form images that I can hardly wait to paint.” \n– William Tinker \n——– \nWe will also be featuring a mini exhibition titled “Imaginary Gardens” by Susan Tinker.\nThere will be a small selection of Susan’s oil paintings on display. Each piece is filled with lush botanical imagery and lively insects – just in time for Spring! \n——–\n“Synthesis from the Soil” by William Tinker | Exhibition runs May 6th through May 28th

SUMMARY:Keyword:
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening of… \n“Keyword:” MFA Thesis Exhibition by Tim Stone. \nExhibition opens Friday\, April 1st 2022\, from 5:30pm – 9pm \nThe artwork on display will be large scale mixed media paintings that explore the current hybrid relationship between our physical and digital spaces! \n“I replicate\, imitate\, and steal digital languages to express how confusing and lost it can be to operate in a world that is both super connected and isolating\, mediated through a screen. The algorithmic ways of processing information through coding and keywords seems rather abstract to me\, even unintentional or misunderstood. \nMy work sutures digital efficiency and painterly inefficiency through physical marks and colors that are rambunctious\, fiery\, and ambiguous in their affect. There is tension between the ordinary and the superlative\, and between what is natural and artificial. I examine how bemusedly liminal our physical and digital spaces have become.” – Tim Stone \n“Keyword:” | Exhibition runs April 1st through April 30th\, 2022

SUMMARY:PRAIRIE CHRONICLES
DESCRIPTION:OPENING APRIL 2\, 7:30-9:30 PM\nJoin us for our April First Friday solo exhibition. We are excited to be welcoming Kansas photographer Larry Schwarm into the gallery. Schwarm’s show focuses on the juxtaposition between the sublime beauty of the Midwest prairies and the absurd beauty of the human civilizations developed on them. \nThe exhibition opens April 2 at the Reuben Saunders Gallery and runs through April 30. \n*Due to the pandemic\, we’ve decided it’s best to alter our event to keep everyone as safe as possible. The opening hours are 10 am to 9 pm. Please feel free to drop in during the day. We do REQUIRE MASKS and will limit the number of visitors in the gallery at any one time.

SUMMARY:Transformation - Paintings by Susan Grace
DESCRIPTION:Susan Grace is a painter who lives and works in Lawrence\, KS. Her work has been widely exhibited throughout the U.S.\, and she has received numerous awards for her work.  Her paintings are in many private and public collections\, including the Mulvane Art Museum\, Topeka\, KS and The Art of Emprise Collection\, Wichita\, KS. Although she studied painting in Athens\, Greece\, her academic background is primarily in literature and theater\, and she taught courses in modern American and European literature at universities in the U.S. and at The American College of Greece in Athens\, Greece.  While teaching\, she always maintained an active studio practice regardless of where she was living. Upon returning to the U.S.\, she held a tenured faculty position at the University of Kansas until she left for a full-time artist studio practice. Her study of literature and theater continues to inspire and influence her work. \n
