MAY 28th Woodblock Workshop With Leon Loughridge
10am – 4 pm
Printing Woodblocks Without a Press
Exploring Boundaries with Moku Hanga Woodblocks
Workshop Description: The extended workshop is designed for any artist to explore the traditional and non-traditional techniques of Japanese printmaking. Traditional moku hanga printing techniques will be explained and used as a spring board to explore non-traditional techniques.
Students will work with pre-carved multi-blocks and print using a rice paste based ink. Basic concepts of woodblock design, image preparation and transfer, and carve techniques will be discussed.
The main focus of the workshop will be learning how to print without a printing press and applying pressure with a traditional “baren”. Throughout the workshop, Leon will demonstrate the various procedures being discussed and will create a three-color print.
Each student will be encouraged to print an edition of their woodblock to exchange with fellow stu-dents.
THE WORKSHOP WILL BE LIMITED TO SIX (6) ARTISTS, allowing for personal attention to each student in understanding the procedures and developing their skill level. The moku hanga printing technique is solvent free and is key to maintaining a healthy print studio environment.
