Stephen  Magsig

Stephen Magsig depicts the forgotten elements of American daily life, emphasizing the effect of industry and urbanization in his native Detroit. Magsig creates pictorial accounts of the disappearing and neglected city spaces such as industrial buildings and storefronts imbuing them with a subtle grace. He personally photographs the scenes he paints, discovering the fundamental highlights and shadows of each scene to create an almost photo-like image. Magsig focuses on capturing the story behind the place and the malleability of paint using the Alla Prima method of applying layers of oil paint onto linen. He studied at Ferris State College and the Center for Creative Studies at the College of Art and Design in Detroit. His work is in numerous collections including the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Flint Institute of Arts, and the Museum of the City of New York.
